The Autobiography of Joseph Gaughan (1905-2001)
Excerpt: When Joseph first met Mary
I saw Mary for the first time at Mark Foy’s Store in 1925. I was standing behind the counter talking to a fellow employee when he drew my attention to a girl who was walking towards us. He said,
“Hey, take a look,” nodding in her direction. I looked and saw a very attractive looking female approaching; she had a very good carriage, straight broad shoulders, head held high, good figure. She smiled and spoke to someone who was going the other way. When she drew level with us, I smiled and said, “Hello,” in my sweetest winning voice, but she kept on her way without taking the slightest notice. My mate said,
“You are wasting your time, she wouldn’t have anything to do with a lousy counter jumper, she’s Secretary to the Managing Director."
